The Rongai Route is a quiet and scenic northern route on Kilimanjaro. It offers a gradual ascent through farmland, forests, moorlands, and alpine desert, providing spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The route’s gentle profile allows for excellent acclimatization, increasing your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

The following itinerary provides a detailed day-by-day guide to your Kilimanjaro climb, including distances, trekking times, altitude gains, and what to expect at each camp.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Moshi Town

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, our friendly driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet your trekking guide, who will provide a detailed briefing about the trek, including safety tips, route overview, and a gear check to ensure everything is in order. Any essential equipment may be rented today. This day is designed to help you acclimatize and prepare mentally for your adventure.

Day 2: Moshi – Nalemoru Gate (1,990m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)

This morning we drive to Nale Moru village, the starting point of the Rongai Route. Begin trekking through farmland and pine forests, gradually gaining altitude. The trail offers the chance to spot wildlife including Colobus monkeys, elephants, and buffaloes. Your first campsite is Simba Camp, located at the edge of the moorland zone. Enjoy the sunset behind Kibo Peak as your crew sets up camp.

Day 3: Simba Camp (2,625m) – Second Cave Camp (3,480m)

Ascend steadily through open moorlands. Along the way, admire giant lobelias, senecios, and wildflowers. Pause for rest and photos at scenic points while your guides ensure the group is well-paced. Camp at Second Cave Camp, offering panoramic views of Kibo’s glaciers and the eastern ice fields.

Day 4: Second Cave Camp (3,480m) – Kikelewa Cave Camp (3,679m)

The hike today is moderate but rewarding. Cross grassy moorlands and gently rising ridges, taking in expansive views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Spot occasional wildlife and unique alpine flora as you ascend to Kikelewa Cave Camp. This camp is ideal for acclimatization before reaching higher altitudes.

Day 5: Kikelewa Cave Camp (3,679m) – Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,303m)

A short but steep climb leads to Mawenzi Tarn, located beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi. The trail becomes more exposed, with little vegetation, showcasing the mountain’s rugged beauty. Spend the afternoon exploring the surrounding area and acclimatizing. Take in views of the vast alpine desert stretching toward Kibo.

Day 6: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,303m) – Kibo Hut (4,730m)

Begin the ascent westward across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The trail transitions from rocky alpine terrain to barren desert. Reach Kibo Hut, where you rest and prepare for the midnight summit push. Enjoy a hearty dinner and a short acclimatization walk nearby if desired.

Day 7: Kibo Hut (4,730m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,705m)

Rise around 23:20 for tea and biscuits before beginning the final ascent. Trek through rocky terrain and scree to Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m), a resting point, then zigzag to Gillman’s Point (5,681m) and finally Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate reaching the roof of Africa before descending to Kibo Hut for a short rest. Continue down to Horombo Hut, enjoying the sunset and spectacular mountain views. This is a long and physically demanding day, totaling around 14 hours of hiking.

  • Hiking time: 7–8 hours to Uhuru Peak, 6–8 hours descent to Horombo

Day 8: Horombo Hut (3,705m) – Marangu Gate (1,860m)

Descend past Mandara Hut through forests to Marangu Gate. Sign the summit register and receive your climbing certificate. Transfer back to Moshi for a well-earned hot shower, celebratory dinner, and rest.

Day 9: Departure and Optional Excursions

On your final day, we ensure your adventure concludes smoothly and memorably. Depending on your flight schedule, our team will provide a comfortable transfer from your hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport. For guests with extra time before departure, optional activities can be arranged, including cultural experiences, wildlife visits, scenic nature excursions, or relaxing opportunities. Extended stays can include safaris or beach holidays to continue your Tanzanian adventure.

  • International flights to and from Tanzania
  • Accommodation in Moshi before or after the trek (2 nights)
  • Comprehensive travel insurance (strongly recommended)
  • Personal trekking equipment such as trekking poles, and other personal gear
  • Personal items and toiletries
  • Optional excursions, souvenirs, or extra activities outside the itinerary
  • For clients arriving at Arusha Airport, an additional $50 for extended transfer
  • Gratuities for the mountain crew – Recommended tipping guidelines are $20 per guide, $15 per cook, and $10 per porter per day per group.
