6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Marangu Route

Trekking Overview

Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu Route is one of the most established and well-loved trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is considered among the most comfortable paths due to its gradual slope and unique mountain hut accommodations with dormitory-style beds and shared dining areas — the only route offering this feature.

Though often seen as an easier climb, it still demands determination, fitness, and proper acclimatization. The five-day itinerary provides a compact and classic experience; however, adding an extra acclimatization day is highly recommended for a greater chance of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

The ascent and descent follow the same path, making it less varied scenically, but ideal during the rainy season when the warm huts are especially appreciated.

The following itinerary provides a detailed day-by-day guide to your Kilimanjaro climb, including distances, trekking times, altitude gains, and what to expect at each camp.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Moshi Town

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, our friendly driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet your trekking guide, who will provide a detailed briefing about the trek, including safety tips, route overview, and a gear check to ensure everything is in order. Any essential equipment you may need can be rented today. This day is designed to help you acclimatize and get mentally ready for the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and driven to the Marangu Gate, where registration and permit formalities will be completed. From here, your adventure begins through a lush rainforest teeming with birdlife, towering trees, and playful blue monkeys. The trek gradually ascends as you make your way to Mandara Hut, your first overnight stop. Upon arrival, take a well-deserved rest or join your guide for a short walk to Maundi Crater, where panoramic views of northern Tanzania and Kenya await.

After an energizing breakfast, continue trekking through the rainforest until you reach the heath and moorland zone. Once here, relax and enjoy the breathtaking scenery overlooking the vast plains of the Maasai Steppe below.

Today is dedicated to acclimatization, an important part of your success on Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, take a steady 4-hour trek toward Zebra Rocks, a striking formation with dark and white streaks resembling a zebra’s pattern. This short hike allows your body to adjust to the altitude while rewarding you with incredible views of the mountain. Return to Horombo Hut for lunch and an afternoon of relaxation, preparing for the next stage of your climb.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,700m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Today’s trek is a gradual but challenging ascent through the alpine desert. You’ll pass the Last Water Point and traverse the broad, barren saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Pass Hans Meyer Cave (5,220m) and continue to Gilman’s Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, where you’ll witness a magical sunrise over Africa. A final push brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the Roof of Africa! After celebrating this incredible achievement, descend carefully to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal, then continue down to Horombo Hut for your final night on the mountain.

By early afternoon, you’ll arrive at Marangu Gate, where you’ll sign out and receive your well-earned summit certificate. Bid farewell to your mountain crew and enjoy a short transfer back to Moshi.

Upon arrival, take a warm shower, celebrate your achievement, and relax. Depending on your flight schedule, you’ll be transferred directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport, or if time allows, enjoy one of our optional day excursions before your departure.
