Trekking Overview

The Lemosho Route is renowned for its scenic beauty and excellent acclimatization profile, making it one of the most rewarding ways to summit Kilimanjaro. Starting on the lush western slopes, the trek passes through rainforest, moorlands, and high alpine desert, providing panoramic views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This route offers a gradual ascent, improving your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) while enjoying diverse landscapes and peaceful trails away from the crowds.

The following itinerary provides a detailed day-by-day guide to your Kilimanjaro climb, including distances, trekking times, altitude gains, and what to expect at each camp.

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania – Moshi Town

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, our friendly driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi town. You will meet your trekking guide, who will provide a detailed briefing about the trek, including safety tips, route overview, and a gear check to ensure everything is in order. Any essential equipment may be rented today. This day is designed to help you acclimatize and prepare mentally for your adventure.

Day 2: Moshi – Lemosho Glades (2,385m) to Big Tree Camp (2,780m)

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the Lemosho Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. Following registration, your climb begins through the lush forests of the Lemosho Glades. Trek steadily to Big Tree Camp, your first overnight stop on the mountain.

Day 3: Big Tree Camp (2,780m) to Shira 2 Camp (3,900m)

Trek across grassy moorlands and volcanic rock formations, passing Shira 1 Camp with occasional views of Kibo Peak. The route gradually ascends, offering panoramic views of the Shira Plateau and Northern Ice Fields on the western slopes. The climb today aids acclimatization as you make your way to Shira 2 Camp.

Day 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,900m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

Begin with a steady ascent into the alpine desert zone, traversing lava ridges beneath the Western Breach glaciers. Reach the Lava Tower (4,640m), a perfect spot for lunch and spectacular mountain views. Descend steeply in the afternoon to Barranco Camp, situated at the base of the Great Barranco Valley, surrounded by towering cliffs and sweeping vistas.

Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

After breakfast, trek across desolate scree slopes to reach Barafu Camp. This steep climb tests your endurance and prepares you for summit night. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and keeping warm. Early dinner and sleep are essential, as you will start the summit ascent between 11:00 pm and midnight.

Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,640m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Millennium Camp (3,790m)

Summit day! Begin your climb around midnight, ascending steep scree slopes to reach Stella Point (5,739m) by sunrise. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa, and enjoy panoramic views of Mawenzi and the surrounding glaciers. Descend via Stella Point to Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Millennium Camp for a well-earned rest.

Day 7: Departure and Optional Excursions

On your final day, we ensure your adventure concludes smoothly and memorably. Depending on your flight schedule, our team will provide a comfortable transfer from your hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

For guests with extra time before departure, optional activities can be arranged, including cultural experiences, wildlife sanctuary visits, scenic excursions, or relaxing opportunities to unwind. For extended stays, we can assist in planning safaris or beach holidays to continue your unforgettable Tanzanian adventure.

  • International flights to and from Tanzania
  • Accommodation in Moshi before or after the trek (2 nights)
  • Comprehensive travel insurance (strongly recommended)
  • Personal trekking equipment such as trekking poles, and other personal gear
  • Personal items and toiletries
  • Optional excursions, souvenirs, or extra activities outside the itinerary
  • For clients arriving at Arusha Airport, an additional $50 for extended transfer
  • Gratuities for the mountain crew – Recommended tipping guidelines are $20 per guide, $15 per cook, and $10 per porter per day per group.
